Where to start

Mississippi uses AccessMS for several state assistance programs, while housing, utility, food, and emergency services may also route through county offices, Community Action Agencies, regional providers, or nonprofit networks.

Apply for state benefits

AccessMS is Mississippi's Common Web Portal for programs such as SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, LIHEAP, weatherization, and other assistance. Program-specific rules and follow-up can still be handled by the responsible state or local agency.

Find nearby help statewide

Mississippi 211 provides free, confidential information and referrals across the state for food, housing, utilities, healthcare, child care, transportation, disaster needs, and other essential services.

Many Mississippi programs use local administration. SNAP and TANF cases are handled through MDHS county offices, Medicaid has regional offices, LIHEAP and weatherization use Community Action Agencies, and housing programs may be administered by local housing authorities or regional nonprofit providers.

Food assistance

For ongoing grocery help, start with SNAP or WIC when the household may qualify. For food needed sooner, Mississippi Food Network and 211 can help locate local food banks, pantries, meal programs, and other food resources.

SNAP provides grocery benefits to eligible Mississippi households. Applications can be submitted online through AccessMS or through the MDHS county office serving the household.

Mississippi SNAP work rules changed. Current MDHS guidance says some adults ages 18 through 64 are limited to three months of SNAP in a 36-month period unless they meet the applicable work requirement or qualify for an exemption. Exemptions include several circumstances, such as pregnancy, disability, or responsibility for a dependent child under age 14. Use current MDHS notices rather than older age limits.

Housing, rent, and utility help

Mississippi housing and utility assistance is spread across Community Action Agencies, public housing authorities, nonprofit homelessness providers, and state or federal housing programs. Funding and waiting lists can change quickly.

Home energy assistance

Mississippi LIHEAP

LIHEAP may help eligible households with home energy bills and qualifying energy emergencies. Mississippi offers LIHEAP in all 82 counties when funding is available. Residents begin with an AccessMS pre-application and then complete the process with the Community Action Agency serving their area.

If debt is also part of the problem

Review the household budget and unsecured debt together

Public assistance may help with food, housing, healthcare, child care, or utilities while credit cards, medical bills, collections, personal loans, payday loans, or other unsecured debts continue affecting the household budget. Money Fit nonprofit credit counseling can help Mississippi residents review income, expenses, debts, and possible next steps.

A debt management plan may help organize eligible unsecured debts into one monthly payment to Money Fit, which then sends payments to participating creditors. It is not a new loan or debt settlement. Creditor participation, concessions, account treatment, fees, and payment changes can vary.

Money Fit does not provide cash assistance, food benefits, rent assistance, utility benefits, government benefits, or emergency grants. The counseling form below is for help reviewing debt and monthly payments.
